Our Legacy

The roots of 16 Green Acres Farm run more than 100 years deep. David T. Washington’s great-grandfather, George Spaldings, was a farmer and pastor in Hastings in the early 1900s. Today, his great-grandson returns to continue that legacy — honoring the land, the history, and the community.

The David W. Story: A Legacy Rooted in Education and Farming

For 38 years, Dr. David T. Washington has dedicated his life to educating children. From teaching 3rd,
6th, and 7th graders, to leading schools as a principal, to shaping futures as a district-level Director of
Community & Schools, his mission has always been the same— to give every child a chance to grow,
learn, and be seen.

Teaching has never been a job for him. It is his passion. It is his calling. It is the work he was born to do.

That passion comes from deep family roots.

Dr. Washington’s great-grandfather was a farmer, a hard-working man who raised his family on the
land, teaching lessons of resilience, faith, discipline, and the value of putting your hands in the soil.
Those lessons were passed down generation after generation. They shaped the man David would
become— a man who believes in work, in service, in community, and in the idea that growth happens
when people are nurtured.

After nearly four decades in the school system, Dr. Washington realized that his two greatest loves—
educating children and farming— were not separate stories but one story waiting to come together.

That story became 16 Green Acres Farm Inc.

“Where Learning Takes Root” is more than a motto. It is a promise. A promise to bring children back to
nature. A promise to give them a safe place after school. A promise to show them animals, gardens,
and wide-open fields instead of video games and television raising them while parents work long hours.
A promise to build a community around learning, farming, and love.

And just like his great-grandfather, Dr. Washington digs in the soil—not just to grow vegetables, but to
grow futures.

Today, 16 Green Acres Farm Inc. represents: legacy, education, family roots, community uplift, and a
dream becoming real.

This is Dr. Washington’s life’s work. This is his passion. This is his story. And this is the story that
continues to inspire the programs, partnerships, grants, and vision of 16 Green Acres Farm Inc.
